Rethinking Content with a Big Picture Approach

It’s too easy to fall into a trap of “reaction” when it comes to out content marketing. We need to achieve a certain result, so we throw some content up on our websites that will hopefully achieve that results. While it’s okay to do a little bit of this, reaction isn’t a real strategy. It’s simply reacting, and the long-term benefits of your content marketing just won’t be there if this is the only way you approach things.

The real fix for this is actually a mindset shift and taking your mind away from reacting to needs and then creating content in that way – to a strategic one. Here are some thoughts that could help you make that shift:

Strategic Focus Eliminates the Need to React

An effective content marketing strategy, when created properly, accounts for just about everything you need your content to do. Do you need to nurture some leads? You would already have content for that. Need your content to generate the leads in the first place? You’ll have content for that, as well.

What we typically see when we encounter marketers that are in a state of reaction is that they are compensating for a lack of strategy. Because they didn’t have a strategic focus in place, the only real way they have a chance to see results is to react first and then create content after. This isn’t sustainable. However, that isn’t to say that reacting is a bad thing. It isn’t. It just can’t be used to replace the strategy; it can be done in addition to implementing the strategy. If you have a strategy in place, you may not feel the need to react at all!

Real Progress is Made Through Consistency

A reaction-based content marketing focus does not create consistency, and we’ve learned that consistency is where the real magic happens. This is where the real progress is made! It’s also a lot easier to sustain a forward-thinking, strategy-based mindset. While implementing, you will know that all your bases are covered. You will understand that you don’t have to scramble to make real progress.

In fact, long-term progress is possible only through consistency. It takes a while for content to get noticed – sometimes even six months to a year. If you are only posting sporadically and on a short-term basis, your results will reflect this.

Improve Efficiency with Focused Effort

When you have a long-term strategy for your content marketing, efficiency kicks in and can become a real time saver. You will develop systems for topic development and writing, create a consistent content marketing calendar, and even have efficient systems for collecting data and analyzing progress. This is all important and can help boost long term success.

In other words, the more consistent and strategy you are with your content marketing, the more likely it is that your content will deliver long-term success. If most of your effort is taken to create and implement a strategy, you can save your “reactionary” energy for when you truly need it.
