When it comes to social media, the perception is that you need to get a lot of views, and even have something go viral, in order for it to work. This isn’t the case, and in fact “viral” traffic isn’t always of the highest quality. Expecting high traffic numbers without being strategically thoughtful is a flawed approach to social media.

What is better? It’s being consistent. Although social media consistency doesn’t have the big numbers attached to it, it does chip away at the audience and deliver compounded results over time. This is especially true for social media strategies that are strategically cohesive with the rest of the digital marketing.

Here’s a closer look as to why consistency wins for social media:

It’s All About Alignment with Your Audience

As mentioned above, when it comes to achieve visibility, having a “viral” post may, on the surface, help you achieve that. However, most of the viral traffic would be curiosity traffic. Something “blowing up” on social media won’t always be aligned with your brand, your goals, and the type of audience you’re looking to attract. Frankly, this is why consistency will always win.

Why? It’s because when you work on your consistency, you show the world that you are thoughtful about how you outreach and attract your audience. You’re focusing on getting your message across to your audience and aligning your actions directly to them. This is why it’s so powerful. If you focus on alignment first, your audience will find you over time.

Improve Lasting Visibility and Reach

Developing lasting visibility with your audience should be your number one goal. Not only that, but social platforms are designed to reward steady participation. It’s also a practice that is good for the algorithm. When an account posts consistently, it sends signals of relevance and reliability to the social media site’s algorithm. This increases the likelihood that content will be shown across the right audiences.

Inconsistent posting, on the other hand, limits reach by reducing the number of opportunities for engagement. You’re not top of mind to your audience, and you also wouldn’t be top of mind to the algorithms a sustainable posting rhythm keeps brands visible without overwhelming their audience.

Consistency Builds Trust and Recognition

Did you know that audiences are more likely to engage with brands they recognize and understand? We all feel that in our daily lives. Consistency helps establish a clear identity and one that is immediately recognizable to the audience. You want your audience to get to know your voice as a brand. The more predictable you are in your messaging, the more trust that will be built up.

Over time, followers begin to associate your brand with specific ideas, values, or expertise.  This is part of alignment, but there’s more to it than that. Alignment, plus consistency builds trust brand trust within a social media program. This familiarity reduces friction and builds trust, making audiences more receptive to future messages. Trust is developed through repeated, dependable interactions.

The best thing you can do for your social media is be consistent! This is what will give you the edge, not viral posts. If you have consistency, and THEN you go viral? That’s a different story. You can enjoy that moment because it comes from an aligned place.
