About the Local SEO Benefits

Written by Nick Stamoulis

There’s a lot that goes into creating an SEO strategy. Factors such as the nature of the business, overall business goals, and the target audience can all impact the strategy. In fact, one of the main things to consider is whether or not a business should focus on local or national SEO. How do you know which to choose? Well, there isn’t an easy yes or no answer. Here are some of the solid benefits for pursuing local SEO, which could help drive your decision”

You Have Fewer Competitors Locally

Let’s say you have a business that actually operates on a national scale, yet the amount of competitors you have on the national level is staggering. Chances are pretty good that you will have fewer competitors locally. This could make a very good case for pursuing local SEO in your overall SEO strategy.

Sure, you want to make sure your customer base knows that you operate naturally. If a lead trickles in from outside of your local area, you don’t want to deter them from becoming a customer. However, you could easily focus on your local presence in your SEO without compromising an overall national strategy.

Better Online Visibility

What this translates to is that you will likely have better online visibility locally than you would on a national level. This is something we have observed regardless of whether or not companies are purposefully pursuing local SEO or not. What happens is, if your company is located in a certain state or metropolitan area, and someone searches for your type of business in that area, you are more likely to do well in search results in your area than outside it.

If you consciously work on your local SEO, your results will probably be even better. So, the goal would be to focus on the physical location of your business. What this really means is that you may not do as well in national search results as you would locally, so it is a good idea to take advantage of this.

It Takes Longer to Do Well for National SEO

Typically, we’ve noticed that it takes longer to do well organically on a national level. It’ doesn’t take as long to perform well in the search engines for local search. That is why we believe for business that have a physical location in a certain area, this should be capitalized on when formulating an SEO strategy.

We find that a combination of local SEO and national SEO is the best approach for businesses that have a physical location in a certain metropolitan area, but that do business naturally. That way, while it takes a bit longer to compete on a national level in the search engines, local SEO seems to show results a lot sooner, so that can start to kick in while waiting for the national presence to gain momentum.

Of course, if you have a business that only does business locally for whatever reason, the absolute best practice is to focus on local SEO exclusively.
