When it comes to digital marketing, throwing money around isn’t necessarily a good thing. Sure, a larger budget is always preferred over a smaller one. However, spending money won’t do any good if there’s no strategy behind it.  Smarter marketers know that it’s important to be intentional in our actions.

There is a big difference between spending money strategically, throwing money at something randomly, or not even spending enough money in the right situations. Spend is important, but it helps to be smart and deliberate about it. That’s what maximizes digital marketing. Here’s more information about this:

Take a Strategy-First Approach

One of the biggest issues that arise when putting together a digital marketing strategy is to take a platform – first approach. This is where you consider each platform as its own eco-system. While it’s true that you need to consider each platform individually, this doesn’t tell the whole story. We need to understand how these platforms fit into the big picture. Otherwise, we’ll just be wasting money.

So really, it should be the other way around. Take a strategy-first approach and determine how the different platforms will fit into it. This is the smart way to go about it. Before committing any budget dollars to something, figure out how it fits into the big picture before spending the money. Action without intention is a waste.

Collect and Analyze Data

As businesses, we generate a lot of data. Much of it is sitting around, forgotten and unused. Smart businesses know how to use this data to the benefit of their digital marketing.  The truth is that not using the data results in a lot of wasted spend. Data tells a story, and that story can help you make the right decisions concerning your digital marketing strategy.

We need data alignment to make the right decisions. Smart marketers love data and they use it constantly to assess progress, uncover trends and changes that need to be made, and can assist with even the initial strategy building, and later, strategic tweaks.

Quality is Better Than Quantity

Too often, marketers focus on the wrong priorities. They think that have a lot of leads is a good thing. On the surface, we all want to have a high volume of leads, but this goal of volume should never compromise lead quality. Remember that volume can be a good thing, but it’s only volume that is backed by strategic intention that gets results.

Smart marketers know that quality is much better than quantity. Don’t flood the internet with your ads and other marketing initiatives unless there’s a purpose and that you discovered the strategic relevance before you did so. Quantity without purpose is a waste of money. Focus on quality first and the results are more likely to follow.

As you can see, it is so much better to be intentional. Spending money is a good thing if there’s a purpose behind it. Otherwise, it’s all too easy for all that spend to go to waste.
