Guest Blogging Isn’t Just for Link Building

Written by Nick Stamoulis

One of the best ways to build links to your site is to participate in content marketing. After all, content based links are very valuable. As long as the content is good it will get noticed by the search engine spiders and target audience members. When speaking to anyone in the SEO industry about building links, one of the top recommendations is to look for guest blogging opportunities. However, it’s important to note that guest blogging shouldn’t be done ONLY to get a link. Guest blogging has many more benefits that are more worthwhile in the long run.

Google has been on a mission to find “unnatural” links and penalize sites accordingly. The game is always changing. Links that once contributed value are now worthless and new link sources are becoming much more important, like social links. This is why it’s important to be careful. You never know what kind of links Google may target next. There has been buzz around the industry that Google may target the creators of guest blog posts and view it as a new kind of “link exchange”. However, in our opinion Google will only go after a specific kind of guest blogger. If Google sees that an author contributes only one post to many different sites that may or may not be related to the industry, it could raise a red flag. One post and one link from many different sources means that you’re obviously doing it just to build a link. On the other hand, if there are many guest posts from the same author on the site it’s more likely that the guest post is there to build brand awareness. There is an obvious relationship there that has grown over time.

If you’ve decided to implement guest blog posting into your strategy, make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons and going about it the right way. If you’re only doing it for a link there’s a good chance that the quality of the post won’t be that great and that you won’t even care where it gets submitted. As long as you get a link somewhere, right? If you want to take a better approach to guest blogging, it’s going to take some work.

It’s important to get your content posted on good, quality sites that have a following and are related to your niche. The first step is to establish a connection with the blog owner. Don’t just reach out to people that you’ve never had any interaction with previously. If they don’t know you they probably won’t allow you to post on their site. A better approach is to build up your content and brand so that people will reach out to you and ask for a guest submission. This can be done by blog commenting on the site and promoting the work of others in social media. These activities grab the attention of blog owners and encourage them to check you out. If they read your blog and think that it’s good and like what you have to say in blog comments and in social media, they will be more willing to reach out. The best guest blog submission locations come about naturally over time.
