A domain name is the name of a website.

A domain name is what comes after the “@” in an email address and after the “www.” in a website address. Any name that is registered in the Domain Name System, or DNS, is a domain name.

The purpose of a domain name is identify computers, services, and networks with a text-based label. A domain name is a recognizable and memorable name compared to a numerically addressed Internet resource. A domain name consists of one or more parts called labels. At the very right, is the domain. The top-level domains include “com,” “net,” “gov,” and “edu.” Second-level domains are to the right of the top-level domain. This is where your domain name will be place. Third level domains are directly to the left of the second-level domains (your domain name). The third-level domain is the “www” part of the URL.

How do you create a domain name? First, you need to choose a domain name. When choosing a domain name, you want to keep it simple and something people will remember. Keeping your domain name as short as possible is a good idea. If you have a business, you will probably want to use your business name. If not, a keyword rich domain name that relates to your business is also a good idea. Avoid using numbers, hyphens, and other symbols in your domain name. They make a domain name confusing and it likely won’t be remembered if you mention it to someone who asks where to find you online.

Next, you’ll want to register your domain name. You can register a domain name for free or pay a yearly fee. When you pay for web hosting, you may be offered your domain name for free. This all depends on the web hosting company you decide to go with. If you want to register a domain name without creating a website right away, you can do this at domain.com.

Once you have your website up and running, you’ll want to get your domain name known. There are a number of ways to advertise your domain name. Guest blogging is a way to draw new visitors to your website without spending money on advertising. You will want to find blogs that compliment your own. If your website has to do with fitness, seek out other fitness blogs. Show their visitors that you’re educated on the subject matter and you will gain an audience as well. Social networking is another way to get your domain name out there. You can do this with posts or by advertising. Banner ads are an inexpensive and effective way to get your domain name seen and remembered by users of the Internet. You will want to create an attractive ad that will draw attention.

Your domain name is how you and your business will be known online. Make sure it is relevant and memorable to those who hear and see it.
