Backlinks have been important to SEO for a long time. However, this concept is one that has been prone to a lot of misuse. So much so, that search engines began to frown on activities that were labeled as “trying to get” backlinks. Yet, they still remained important. How does one end up with a solid backlink portfolio while staying to the rules in place on best practices for obtaining them? Here’s more information that will help you navigate this.

Relevance Creates the Foundation

When looking through your own backlink portfolio, you need to ask yourself if each link is relevant to your business. For example, if you sell bicycle parts to cycling enthusiasts, relevant backlinks would all pertain to cycling. If you have a manufacturing company, your backlinks should pertain to your industry, at least loosely. The idea of relevance is where the notion of “high-quality” when it comes to backlinks begins.

Relevance shows the search engines that it had been earned from natural, organic marketing methods, and not forced or placed artificially. It tells search engines that the linked content is useful within a specific topic ecosystem, which strengthens its authority for related search queries.

Authority Sends a Signal of Relevance

Relevance also shows a sense of authority and trust, which are the current benchmarks for what makes a high-quality backlink or not. Links from established and trusted websites hold more value than links from low-quality or newer websites. Building authority is something that takes a long term effort, so if one of these authority sites links to you, this makes for a nice addition to your backlink portfolio.

Trust is equally important. Search engines evaluate whether a site appears legitimate, transparent, and free from spammy behavior. A single backlink from a highly trusted source can often outweigh dozens of links from questionable ones.

Not All Backlinks Are the Same

First of all, it is important to understand that not all backlinks are created equally. The issue is, we can’t really control Here’s a look at the different tiers:

Low-Quality

Low-quality backlinks are basically spammy and not very useful at all to anyone. They may not even be relevant! There is no reason why any business would ever want these on purpose. When we see these low quality backlinks in our client’s portfolio, we “disavow” them in Google immediately, which means that we are telling Google we had nothing to do with it.

Mid-Quality

These are backlinks that aren’t necessarily excellent, but aren’t bad either. Keeping these around won’t hurt your SEO at all, and they could even help, especially if the websites are part of your industry.  These are links that come from real websites that actually do pertain to your content, but the websites themselves may not be the gold-standard authority websites we really like to see in a good portfolio.

High-Quality

High-quality backlinks are of the best quality, meaning that they have the greatest authority. There are some universal websites that are considered high quality, such as a high-quality news site, a university, and more. These help your backlink portfolio considerably because they show you are recognized as an authority in your industry.

As you can see, you need a great backlink portfolio that aligns with modern best practices. If you market yourself in a quality way and position yourself as an expert in your industry, the good backlinks will come.
