6 Tips to Create an SEO Friendly Blog

Written by Nick Stamoulis

One of the most important SEO tips today is to add a blog to your business website and publish new, high-quality content there on a regular basis. This is because new blog posts keep the site updated and “fresh” which brings the search engines back to the site to re-crawl and index it, every blog post is an opportunity to target specific keywords, and blog post content can be shared in social media, generating awareness and inbound links. All very important stuff. If you’re going to be utilizing a blog and posting great content there, it’s important to make the most of it and set up the blog in an SEO-friendly way. Here are 6 blog tips for SEO:

Don’t include dates

Including the date on the blog post and/or within the blog post URL is dating the content unnecessarily. For SEO purposes, the best blog content is informational and evergreen which means that it’s just as relevant today as it will be a few months down the line. Including a date on the post can turn it into “old” content, even though the information is still valid. “Old” content might not be shared as frequently or clicked on. Removing dates makes it easier to promote existing posts in social media again and again.

Manually review and respond to comments

If you’re going to allow comments on the blog, make sure to review them manually before they get posted. Blog commenting is still a relevant SEO link building tactic which means that, unfortunately, blog comment fields are a prime spot for spammers. You’ll notice plenty of spammy comments or links. If they get posted to your site, they are going to harm it. Blog comments should never get posted automatically. If you don’t have the time or resources to manually review, approve, publish, and respond to comments, consider removing them from the blog entirely.

Add sharing buttons

Encourage people to share their thoughts along with your content in social media by including buttons on each post that make it easy to share. The buttons you include will depend on who your target audience is. For example, LinkedIn is important for a B2B crowd but doesn’t necessarily need to be on a B2C website. An email share button is essential across all audiences.

Complete author bio information

Who is writing the posts? If you have different authors posting, add bio information for each author to instill trust. If it doesn’t matter who is posting the content or you don’t want to separate by author, the author can always be “Company Name.”

Keep categories simple

Too many categories can be confusing to users. It’s also a spammy SEO approach to have a category for every keyword, especially if many of the categories are similar.

Don’t use “tags”

Using blog post tags is an outdated approach. It’s also not great from an SEO perspective because every tag is creating a tag page that is essentially duplicate content. If your blog currently includes tags, re-direct any tag pages to the most relevant category page.

Blogging requires a lot of time and effort, so it’s important to follow best practices. Following these tips results in a clean-looking, user friendly, SEO friendly blog.
