Don’t Ditch Your Website For Social Media Profiles

Written by Nick Stamoulis

With so many social media profiles available, it might be tempting to give up, or use to a lesser degree, your website. Social media has become a large part of online marketing and a very useful one. The number of social media users is growing. Everyone has one, if not more, social media accounts. People check their social media accounts often. It makes sense that online marketing will thrive in those spaces, assuming you are following and being followed by relevant accounts. Because social media is such a large part of the online world, many businesses are ditching work they put into their website to focus solely on social media profile pages. Even though social media is a beneficial avenue, it’s important that businesses still keep their websites up-to-date, active, and relevant. Here’s why:

Social Media Popularity is Fickle

When it comes to the various social media sites such as Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, to name a few, popularity comes and goes. One day, everyone is raving about one site and it seems to where everyone is spending time, and the next day, a new social media site has everyone’s attention. It’s impossible to predict when and why a social media site might be popular or if it will even exist tomorrow. This is why it is important to continue working on and growing your website. You can always continue to do online marketing using social media sites, but don’t rely solely on them.

You Don’t Own Your Social Media Profile

If you’re surprised to hear that you don’t own your social media profile, this may be the push you need to focus as much on your website as you do on social media. Your Facebook page, for example, may have your name and work attached to it, but Facebook actually owns your page. Facebook, and other social media sites, can change the layout of their site at any time, without notice.

This may or may not work with what you’ve done with your page. With your own website, you are in control at all times. You can change the layout, the colors, or the font style at any time or leave them the same if they are working for you. Social media sites should be considered your second priority.

You Will Conduct More Business on Your Website

Social media can be a great space for online marketing and promoting your content, but it’s probably not going to be where you make many sales. You might make one here and there, but social media should not be where you expect this business to be conducted. Consider social media to be an influencer in someone’s decision to consider or make a purchase, but understand that more often than not, they will visit your website to make a purchase.

Social media is a great way to market your business online. It can be used to promote your brand, let followers know when you have new content, and allow new people to discover you. With all the benefits of social media, you don’t want to stop focusing on your website.
