Web Development Services Do I Need?
Categorized in: Digital Marketing
When it comes to maintaining your digital marketing strategy and website development capabilities, it might be tempting to hire multiple vendors to take care of different things. Many don’t realize that this isn’t always the best approach! Having too many vendors creates confusion and waste. There are firms that can cover a wide variety of tasks – you don’t need to hire a variety of agencies to do different things. However, there are pros and cons to both approaches. Here are some thoughts:
What Happens When You Hire Too Many Firms?
There are a few ways that waste is created if using multiple firms to perform different tasks. First of all, many of the firms could have overlap in terms of the services they offer. For example, if you hire a full-service digital marketing agency, chances are pretty good that they also have resources to help with web development – either with a partner firm or with in-house resources. They would have handpicked the company that complements their services nicely, and this could also save you money.
If you have a third party, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it could create confusion. First of all, there’s no guarantee that both firms will cooperate well together. Second of all, if you’re working with a digital marketing agency and they need certain tasks done to complete their work, there’s no guarantee that your web development resources will be able to handle what they need, and this will also cost you extra money because you still might have to get those tasks done anyway to maximize results.
What Do You Really Need?
Before driving out different agencies, you should really consider what it is you really need. In our experience, companies that hire too many agencies did so because when they initially shopped for one, they didn’t have a clear, big picture perspective about what they really needed. They would add agencies and service providers as the need arose, but they often do so without realizing that one of their agencies could have handled the work to begin with.
It all starts with knowing what you need. And if you don’t know, perhaps the best approach is to begin your relationship with a full-service digital marketing agency that either has all the capabilities that you need, or could need in the future. A good agency will also help you eliminate waste – it could be that if one agency talks you into a service that you “need” you actually might not need it – it might not be aligned with your digital strategy and they could just be trying to make a sale.
The bottom line is that you should consider hiring a full-service agency and keeping them in the loop about all the services you need. Use the full-service agency is a home base and branch out from there as your digital marketing strategy evolves. After all, most of the tasks that you’d need done will either directly or indirectly relate to your digital marketing.
