There’s a lot that goes into a complete SEO strategy. As your business has grown, you may have moved beyond the basic tactics in favor of more advanced SEO. While there is nothing wrong with leveling up your SEO strategy, you don’t want to forget the basics. They can actually give you an advantage over your competition. Here’s what you need to know about SEO basics:
Website Speed
The speed of your website matters to the success of your SEO. Fast loading websites contributes positively to user experience, which contributes to a more prominent spot in the search engines. This is because search engines want users to have the best experience when visiting a website. Website speed refers to the average loading time of your entire website and page speed refers to the loading speed of each individual page.
Neither factor should be ignored, but it’s important to make sure your website speed is fast. Some things that can impact website speed include your internet provider, the server’s performance, the type of connection used, and the browser that is used.
URL Structure
URL structure is what tells search engines what each page of your website are about as well as how they relate to each other. Simply put, URLs are the organization of the content of your website. For SEO, URL structure makes a big difference. A URL structure that is organized with page hierarchies improves the user experience.
Creating a website that is easy to browse is something the search engines will look at and want to promote for their users. Your URL structure should be easy to read and include keywords that relate to your brand and business. SEO-friendly URL structures should also:
- be short and simple: if a title is too long for a URL, it’s a good idea to reduce it to a shorter URL. Short URLs often rank better.
- use hyphens: since there are no spaces in URLs, take advantage of hyphens to make URLs easier to read.
- redirect old URLs: over time, you will make changes to your website, which will require redirects. You don’t want broken links for visitors.
URL structure is an important part of your website. When you take the time to improve the URL structure, you keep your SEO efforts on the right track.
Backlink Portfolio
Backlinks are an SEO basic that can get you the long-term results that you want. You never want to stop building your backlink portfolio, but you want to do it in the right way to benefit your SEO efforts. It’s important that backlinks come from reputable websites and blogs. It’s better to have fewer high-quality backlinks than many low-quality backlinks that come from sources that are mediocre.
Search engines take the sources of backlinks into consideration. Backlinks not only include blogs and articles that you have published on reputable sites, but online directories, social links, and comments you make on other blogs where you leave a link to your website. By building a high-quality backlink portfolio, you show search engines and visitors that you are also reputable and knowledgeable in your industry.
Don’t leave the basics of SEO behind. By continuing to nurture these tactics, you will continue to benefit your website, brand, and business for the long-term.
