Social Media Can Be A Great Source of Immediate Traffic

It’s important to understand that SEO is a long-term; building process that grows on itself over time. The things you do today might not have any real impact for several weeks, or even months, but they can carry you for months after the fact. The content you create today might take a few days to get crawled and indexed by Google, and then it has to age naturally and crawl its way up the SERPs, meaning you can’t count on any real organic traffic for some time. Have no fear, it will come in time! But while you are waiting for the organic visitors to roll on in you can count on social media to be a solid source of immediate traffic.

The graph below shows total traffic to a client’s blog post. As you can see the day the post went live there was a spike in traffic thanks to social channels including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and more. It trickles off in the days following after the initial flurry is over.Social Media Traffic

But as you can see by the graph below, given enough time most blog posts will pull in a steady stream of organic traffic. In the last year this post pulled in almost 1,500 visitors, nearly 1,300 of which came from Google.

However, many site owners aren’t willing to wait a year to see the full impact of their content marketing efforts. Even though 10 more posts like this over the year would equal nearly 13,000 extra visitors in just a year (which is huge!), if you look at a smaller chunk of time you might only see 10 or 15 visitors from Google, which is certainly not bad but not nearly as exciting as 500. However, if you look at your social traffic and social engagement numbers you might see a totally different story.

Another one of our B2B clients hadn’t seen much organic growth in 6 months (nothing to write home about really), but traffic from LinkedIn increased over 500% in the same time period! The best part about social media marketing is that it’s a form of opt-in marketing. People have to choose to follow, Like, or be a fan of your brand, giving you permission to contact them with your content and updates. They have identified themselves as your target audience and are waiting to hear from you!

One of our B2C clients has slowly been growing in terms of organic traffic, but right now the social media numbers eclipse the Google numbers. One recent Facebook post has nearly 1,000 Likes and over 300 shares, resulting in several hundred Facebook visitors to the page in a single day. As the Google traffic grows slowly over time, the social media traffic is there to keep things moving and growing and help build their brand and grow their business. That’s why it needs to be social media AND SEO.

Most businesses cannot afford to sit back and wait for Google to deliver traffic to their site, hence why we invest in things like link building and earning, content marketing, social media marketing, and more. All of these things help drive targeted traffic to our sites while we wait for Google to catch up and push our website to the tops of the SERP.
