No Two SEOs Are The Same
If you’re reading this blog it’s likely that you are either in the marketing or SEO industry and just like to read the opinions of others and keep up with trends or you are a smart website owner that realizes that it’s essential to get involved in search engine optimization if you want to find any success online. If that’s the case it’s likely that you’ve been reading lots of blog posts and articles that people in the industry have published to find out how you should go about this whole SEO thing. As you probably noticed in your research, there are lots of different opinions out there. There are the black hats that don’t follow the search engine webmaster guidelines and use unethical techniques to get better search rankings in the short term, the white hats that strictly follow the search engine webmaster guidelines to avoid the risk of getting any penalties, and the gray hats that have policies that land somewhere in between the two.
There are so many SEO “experts” out there that offer consulting, full service SEO, and sometimes a combination of the two. Some truly are experts, others- not so much. Within each of the groups of SEOs (black hat, white hat, and gray hat) it’s likely that no two individuals or companies will take the same exact approach or make the same recommendations. There are thousands of SEO consultants and companies out there, which means that there are thousands of opinions and approaches. One thing is for sure, you will never find two SEOs that agree on everything. This is because there really is no exact method. SEO is all about trial and error, keeping up with industry trends and learning from the experiences, both positive and negative, of others. This is important for website owners to know for two reasons.
First, never work with more than one SEO company at the same time, whether it is for more than one website or on the same website to see which company gets better results. You will get conflicting messages about what a good SEO result is and the best way to get there. Some SEO companies focus on rankings, others focus on traffic, and others focus on conversions. It can be confusing. Work with one SEO specialist at a time. Working with two could be a nightmare.
Second, do your research before signing a contract or receiving consulting services from anyone. Read the search engine webmaster guidelines to know what kind of campaign you’d like to run and find an agency that fits. Ask the consultant/agency questions as to how they would go about their strategy. If something sounds sketchy and you aren’t comfortable, move along. There’s at least a few thousands other SEOs out there.
