Coming Up With Ideas for Great Content

Written by Nick Stamoulis

A good website will have plenty of content that will please your visitors first, search engines second. One thing that visitors especially value is when your website is fresh and unique. There is so much information online that people who come to your site need to feel as if they are getting special treatment. This means that the articles that you post need to feel fresh or else you will turn off your visitors.

If you’ve been writing for your site for a while, though, you may feel as if you are running out of ideas. The good news is that this isn’t necessarily the case. There are ways to breathe new life into your website content which will not only please your visitors, but the search engines as well.

Keep Up With Industry Trends

Keeping up with trends in your industry, and then writing about these trends when it makes sense, is a great way to breathe new life into your content. To stay current, try using Google’s “alert” tool, which will funnel new content into your email address based on the keywords you feed it. So, if you have a lady’s fashion boutique, you’ll want to add words like “fashion” and “women’s fashion” into the alerts. Google will send you an email whenever it grabs content with your specified keyword.

Coming Up With Ideas for Great ContentAside from Google trends, you can also frequent any known authority websites in your industry for ideas and information. They may have a unique way of viewing a topic and may also have insights into any trends you may want to cover on your own site.

Revisit Older Topics

Just because you’ve already written about a subject doesn’t mean you couldn’t do so again with a new spin. In some industries, there’s a finite amount of topics you can cover, and unless you find new ways of delivering the information, you’ll run out of things to write about. While it is poor practice to repost old content, you can certainly look at the subject in a new way.

One great way to revisit an older topic is to revisit any interviews you may have posted on your site. Chances are pretty good that the interview will contain enough information to inspire a few more articles. For example, each question could turn into a new article. To give the article substance, you could also quote the expert and even link back to the original interview for some internal link building

Vary the Authors

Sometimes, simply varying who writes the content can help freshen up your content. Everyone has his own unique writing style and way of looking at a topic. A new writer could also think of new topics that your current author could have overlooked. If you are concerned about voice unity, you can have your current writer still compose articles for your site. Anything the new writer will do would be an extra bonus. You could also have the new author try to maintain a similar style that already exists on your site while also giving a fresh perspective.
