Web Designers Should Not Do SEO

Writing by Nick Stamoulis in SEO

It’s important for businesses of all sizes and across all industries to have a website. Nearly everyone is connected to the web these days and that’s where they find information on just about everything. If you don’t have an online presence and can’t be found in the mix you will miss out on lots of opportunities. Therefore, it’s a necessity for survival to have a business website, and not just any website will do. The website needs to be useable, provide important and relevant information, and be well optimized. It also helps if the website is pleasing to the eye. A website that is dull, lacks good content, and can’t be found is just as bad as not having a website, and in some cases might be even worse. When it comes to owning and operating a website, do it right or don’t do it at all.

There are two main components of website development. The first is creating the web design and structure. The second is search engine optimization. They are both very important aspects that work together to build a reputable website. However, just because they have a common goal, to attract a target audience, does not mean that they are one and the same. Quite the opposite is true actually. Web designers are responsible for making a website useable and visually appealing. SEO experts are responsible for making a website rank in the search engines for targeted keywords.

Since companies often hire web designers and SEO experts separately, people in the industry have started thinking, “what if we offered both?” If an SEO company wants to hire a web designer or a web design firm wants to hire an SEO specialist, that’s one thing. However, there seems to be a misconception out there that an SEO specialist can learn design and do it all or that a web designer can learn SEO. While it’s true that they may be able to learn, it takes a long time to learn something and do it well. There’s a reason that SEO experts and web designers have full time jobs. There is enough work to be done in their current line of work.

Trying to “learn” SEO or web design while your primary focus is something else is not the right approach. It takes time to learn and if you are good at what you currently do, you shouldn’t have the time to do both. Very few, if any, people out there do both, or at least do both well. Working with a person with a design background that is learning SEO will result in an awesome looking site and OK optimization. Working with an SEO expert that is learning design will result in a well optimized site that looks OK. As a website owner you should want both of these aspects of your site to be great. That’s why it’s important for SEOs and web designers to just stick to what they know and continue to improve upon that craft.
