Stop Looking for SEO Secrets!

I’ve talked with so many site owners over the years that want to know my SEO secrets—what’s the trick to getting to the top of Google? How many times does a keyword need to be repeated in a piece of content for it to rank well? How many inbound links are needed to increase PageRank? How many visitors will certain keywords send each month? Wonder what my answer to these (any many other questions) is? There are no SEO secrets! There is no magic formula that will guarantee success that SEO providers are keeping close to their chest in order to ensure job security. There are no SEO secrets!

The real key to long term SEO success is just to do it and do it right every step of the way (or as best as you can). In addition to keyword research and white hat onsite optimization, it’s important that you develop (and execute!) a link building strategy. The key to a great link building strategy is to keep it slow and diversified. You don’t want to give the search engines any reason to think you are trying to game the search results. Obviously the point of SEO is to help your website do well in the SERPs, but you don’t want to be overly aggressive to the point where you cross any lines set forth in the search engine guidelines. Believe it or not, the search engines want you to do a good job with your SEO because it helps clean up the search results (which are the product they are pushing to users.) But you have to earn every visitor, every well ranked page, and every indexed piece of content. That’s the only SEO secret I can think of—you have to earn your success. It’s not a very good secret (mostly because it’s not that secret) but since so many site owners have a hard time understanding that it might as well be.

When business owners start digging for SEO secrets, it’s usually because they are looking for a way to speed up the process. Maybe it’s a startup that has investors breathing down their necks to produce a return; maybe they need to justify their actions to a manger or C-suite executive, whatever the reason this site owner is looking for some SEO secret that will push their campaign along and produce overnight results. Unfortunately, SEO just doesn’t work that way. There are too many factors out of your hands that could impact the long term success of your SEO campaign that trying to artificially push it along could actually backfire and cause more harm than good in the end.

If you are still looking for my SEO secrets, here is what I’ve learned over the years:

1. Write great content for the HUMAN READER, not the search engines. In fact, if site owners and marketers spent more time worrying about how their website appears to/helps their target audience and less time chasing the algorithm chances are their SEO would do much better in the long run.

2. Get all the basics in order before you start worrying about advanced online marketing. You have to walk before you can run and without a solid foundation you’re SEO could easily crumble.

3. Just do it! Stop putting SEO on the backburner and start making headway now. It’s never going to get easier so why keep putting it off?
