Be Wary of SEO Firms That Spam You

There are lots of SEO companies and consultants out there. Some are great, some are decent, and some are just plain awful. Unfortunately for website owners that are looking for some assistance with their SEO, it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between them all, especially in the beginning. This is why it’s extremely important for individuals and companies that want to start an SEO campaign to have a basic knowledge of SEO before hiring a partner. It will certainly help to know which tactics are good and which are “spammy” and black hat when deciding who to work with. While some negative qualities might not be obvious from the start, here’s a helpful tip- stay away from an SEO firm that spams you.

If you receive an email or cold call out of the blue from an SEO company that wants to work with you, think twice before initiating a conversation. This doesn’t mean that they are doing a good job of promoting themselves. In fact, it probably means the opposite. Search engine optimization is all about building up a website presence and brand in the search engines and online in general. A good SEO company will practice what they preach, or what they should be preaching anyway. They should be using the same strategies online for themselves as they do for their clients to build up a reputable online presence.

An SEO company shouldn’t be blindly cold calling anyone and everyone that has a website to try and get business. They should be establishing themselves as an expert in their industry by writing a blog, leaving well thought out comments on the blogs of others, distributing informative and educational articles, and commenting in industry forums. They should be connecting with prospects on social media networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn and promoting themselves and their knowledge across these channels. If they can’t get any leads using these tactics, they are obviously doing something wrong. Who wants to hire an SEO company that can’t even properly promote themselves and get leads online?

You should especially be wary if you are contacted by an unknown company if you have already been working with a different SEO company for awhile. A sneaky tactic that some companies take is to look at their competitor’s websites for testimonials and client lists and contact those people to try and get them to switch over. A good company shouldn’t have to “steal” other people’s clients. There’s a good chance that a company like this is also sleazy in their SEO practices and engages in black hat tactics that aren’t viewed favorably by the search engines.

Basically, a good SEO company doesn’t need to seek out clients. Due to their hard work and positive reputation they will have potential clients initiating contact with them. Not the other way around.
