Beware of So-Called SEO “Experts”
Search engine optimization has been somewhat “hot” lately. Website owners are realizing that it takes more than merely setting up a website to find any success with it. It’s all about the search engines. If you can’t be found on the first page of a Google search it’s likely that you might not be found at all. Many website owners don’t have the time or the resources to optimize their site themselves so they hire an SEO consultant or agency to do most of the work for them. Smart marketers and business people have noticed this trend and chosen to get involved in search engine optimization, which has resulted in an industry that’s very cluttered with too much noise.
Individuals that get some SEO industry knowledge tend to consider themselves to be “experts” with little actual experience. Just because they worked at a search company for a year or took a few classes that covered the subject in college it does not mean that they are an expert. It takes years to fully understand the ins and outs of the industry, and even then it’s an industry that’s constantly evolving. It’s important to have a strong background and continue to evolve as the industry changes. So how do you know if you’re working with an expert or not?
The first way to check is that an expert practices what they preach and has a well optimized site of their own. When contemplating whether or not to hire a firm, do a Google search for the company that doesn’t include their branded name. For example, try searching for “SEO company” and whatever city they are located in. So, if they are located in San Francisco, try “SEO company San Francisco”. If they are nowhere to be found it means that they could just be starting out or they haven’t done a good job of optimizing their own site. Either way, you probably don’t want to put the fate of your website into the hands of a company that’s own website does not rank.
The second way is to check out the credentials of a company. An expert that is well established in the industry will have no problem with providing a potential client with a significant number of references and testimonials. If an agency can’t provide you with more than one or two references it’s possible that a fair number of their clients had a bad experience. Or, it means that they just haven’t had many clients at all.
When hiring an SEO consultant or agency it’s important to do some research. Even just spending a short amount of time researching companies will provide some useful insights. After a little bit of digging, it will become more clear who the real experts are.
