SEO Is Like Dessert
When implementing an SEO campaign one piece of advice is to think of it like dessert, maybe like a box of cookies for example. It might be tempting to eat the whole box in one sitting, but it’s likely that you will feel sick after doing so and probably gain a few pounds in the process. Like dessert, SEO tactics are best used in moderation and there are repercussions for over indulging.
Here are 3 components of SEO where moderation is key:
The best websites have a simple design and layout and only include content that is necessary and leads to conversions. Really think about the content on your website. Do you really need those ads or multimedia files? If not, get rid of them. They contribute to page load time and can be an unnecessary distraction.
We know that the search engines look at words and text on your site to determine what it is about and how it should be ranked. That’s why it’s important to do keyword research in the first phase of SEO. The keywords that you choose to target can essentially make or break the campaign, so it’s necessary to choose wisely. Once you have a good keyword list it may be tempting to try and get them into the content as many times as possible. That’s called keyword stuffing. Don’t do it. It reads poorly from a visitor perspective and looks spammy from a search engine perspective. Instead, write all of your content for your readers first, and then implement some keywords naturally. Don’t force it. Keywords are important, but don’t overuse them.
Since the number of relevant inbound links pointing to a website is a ranking factor, black hat SEOs are known for generating lots of quick links. You’ve seen the ads. “1,000 links for $20!” The search engines aren’t dumb. They know what those kinds of links are and it’s likely that you’ll get a penalty if you implement this kind of strategy. Links should build gradually over time. 15-20 link building activities per month is a realistic goal. Once your website gains some momentum links will build naturally as well.
Like the box of cookies, it’s tempting to over indulge in SEO. After all, many website owners want results “right now!” That’s not how SEO works. It’s a long term strategy to build your presence and reputation online and in the search engines.
