SEO is Nothing Without These 3 Things
As the search engine algorithms continue to get more and more complex, SEO campaigns must adapt in order to keep up with best practices. If your SEO campaign is relying on tactics like general directory submissions and link exchanges you are going to find that it’s not working or even worse, that it could be hurting the visibility of your site in the search engines. An SEO campaign today requires that you are active in these three things: content marketing, link building, and social media marketing. These items should not be viewed as separate entities or be kept in separate silos. They need to be integrated in order to improve SEO efforts.
The search engines rank individual webpages that are made up of, you guessed it- content! If you aren’t creating content you aren’t creating webpages and therefore aren’t going to show up in search results. It’s really a simple concept to understand when you think about it. Your existing website content is a great place to start. It needs to be optimized by incorporating relevant keywords into the page title tag, Meta description tag, and body content. While that will get you some traction in the search engines, it really isn’t enough. You should be creating a steady stream of content on a regular basis. It’s doubtful that you were able to target every single keyword that is relevant on the existing pages of your site. This is where a blog comes into play. By adding a business blog to your site and updating it on a regular basis you are adding new pages of content to your site that will be crawled, indexed, and appear in search for related search terms.
Link building isn’t what it once was, but it’s still important. Links are still what help to convey trust to the search engines. If your site has inbound links from high authority sites, some of that authority will be passed on to your site. The key to link building today is to focus on building links from sites that are highly relevant to your niche and can also help to generate traffic back to the site because it’s a place where target audience members hang out on the web. This tells the search engines that you are building the link for visibility and website visitors, not just to add another link to your link portfolio for the search engines to see.
Social media marketing
Social media marketing is important to increase brand exposure but it also gives your SEO campaign a boost if you are using it properly. Links that are shared in social media help to improve the “social signals” of a website, which is one more factor that is included in the search ranking algorithms. The search engines ultimately want to rank content that users will appreciate. If a piece of content is performing well in social media (being shared, re-tweeted, liked, etc.) that’s a sign that it is valuable.
