4 Reasons It’s Time to Redesign a Website
Sometimes when a client is about to get started with an SEO campaign, they wonder if they need to also redesign their website. It’s not necessary to redesign a website when implementing an SEO campaign, but in some cases it can’t hurt. SEO works to build visibility in the search engines and online in general to generate more traffic to a site. Once a visitor lands on the site, it’s the quality of the site that will encourage them to convert or to bounce out of there. As long as you are investing in SEO, you might as well have a website that is worth the money and effort, right? Here are 4 reasons that it’s time to redesign a website:
Website design is subjective. What one person likes is different than what the next person likes. However, one thing that can mostly be agreed upon is whether a site looks outdated. A good rule of thumb is to redesign a website every 3-5 years or so to keep it fresh. If your website looks like it was designed in the days of dial up, it looks unprofessional. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you need to rebuild all of your content but it provides the opportunity to improve the functionality and write some new pages if it seems necessary to do so.
It No Longer Converts
If you see a downward trend in conversion over a long period of time (at least a year), it could be a sign that something is wrong with your site and it’s time for a redesign. This doesn’t mean that if you have a few slow months that you need to redesign your site, but a gradual decline in sales, leads, phone calls, etc. is a warning sign.
It’s Too Costly to Update
If you don’t have a content management system and are paying lots of money to have a website updated frequently, even for just minor changes, it may be time to move over to a CMS. However, it’s important to weigh whether it makes sense to do so. If you are only making a few changes a year, it may not be worth the investment and time that it takes to learn the CMS.
It’s Difficult to Optimize
Due to technical functionality, some websites make it nearly impossible to optimize a website or incorporate social media elements, such as embedding social sharing buttons. Since SEO and social media are so important today to improve a brand presence online, it’s worth investing in a website redesign.
