Places to Find Keywords for Blog Post Titles

Writing by Brick Marketing in Keyword Research

If you are blogging with SEO in mind (which you should be) you know that it’s important to include targeted keywords in the post and meta information. The meta element that carries the most weight with the search engines is the title, so it’s important to include keywords there as appropriate. The keywords that you include in blog post titles don’t necessarily need to be the same ones that you are targeting on the pages of your website. Blog post titles give you the opportunity to branch out and target more long tail keywords that people are still searching for. Once you find these keywords, it can help influence the content that you write and even help you generate new ideas. Here are a few places to find long tail keywords to target in blog post titles and within the content:

Google keyword research tool

If you’ve conducted keyword research recently (within the last 6 months), take a look at the data that you have. Since you should only target 2-5 keywords on every page of the website it’s doubtful that you used all of the keywords that came up in your research. Blog posts are a great place to use them. If it’s been awhile since you conducted keyword research, spend some time plugging in your keywords to see what is suggested. Depending on the industry, there may be some new ones that can be used in blog posts.

Competitor ads
Conduct a search for keywords that are related to those that you are targeting. What kinds of PPC ads appear and what keywords are they targeting that are similar?

Answers sites
Browse Yahoo! and LinkedIn Answers to see what kinds of questions people are asking. It’s likely that many more people have that exact same question. Some people even type questions directly into the Google search box. People ask very specific questions, and the answers to these questions can make great blog posts.

Forums
Take the same approach as you would to answers sites. Look for niche forums in your industry. See what questions people are asking and what kinds of responses they are getting. If you write a great post that addresses a question, you can suggest a link to that post within the forum.
